Sri Lanka's ship repair facilities are globally renowned. Inside the confined spaces of cargo ships, tankers, and bulk carriers, hot work is extremely dangerous. Our heavy-duty silica welding blankets are used to line the steel bulkheads, preventing heat transfer to adjacent compartments containing fuel or flammable cargo. Historically, many fabrication shops in South Asia relied on low-cost, disposable canvas or basic asbestos sheets to block sparks. However, due to severe health concerns surrounding asbestos and the poor fire resistance of canvas, the Sri Lankan Department of Labour and international safety inspectors have enforced strict bans on these outdated materials. The market has shifted decisively towards advanced synthetic fibers.
Today, the primary trend in the Sri Lankan market is the adoption of high-silica blankets and silicone-coated fiberglass cloths. High-silica blankets contain over 96% silicon dioxide (SiO2), allowing them to withstand continuous temperatures up to 1000°C and short bursts of up to 1700°C. This makes them indispensable for heavy-duty ship repair at the Colombo Dockyard. Meanwhile, silicone-coated fiberglass is favored for outdoor construction projects in humid coastal zones because the silicone coating prevents water absorption, oil penetration, and atmospheric weathering, ensuring a much longer service life compared to uncoated fabrics.
